Every year on 15 September, India celebrates Engineers' Day in honour of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, one of the country's greatest engineers. To mark the day in 2026, AIMS Olympiad Academy has created four special quizzes that help students discover the engineering all around them, from the bridges they cross to the bulbs that light their homes.

Who was Sir M. Visvesvaraya?

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (1861–1962) was born in Muddenahalli, Karnataka. He is remembered for building dams, improving irrigation and making cities safer from floods. He was the chief engineer for the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam near Mysuru, served as the Diwan of Mysore, and received the Bharat Ratna in 1955.

A Hyderabad connection: after the great Musi river flood of 1908, Sir M. Visvesvaraya planned flood protection for Hyderabad. The Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs were built as part of that plan and still serve the city today.

2026 marks his 165th birth anniversary, a perfect time for students to learn how engineers think, plan and solve problems.

What students will learn

  • Observation and reasoning: spotting shapes, patterns and triangles in real structures.
  • Maths in action: counting, perimeter, ratio, speed, volume and trigonometry, all in engineering situations.
  • Science behind machines: levers, pulleys, gears, circuits, mirrors and energy.
  • India's engineering story: from Sir M. Visvesvaraya's dams to Chandrayaan-3 and India's newest bridges.
  • Values: safety first, and never giving up when a design fails.

How to attempt the quiz

  1. Find your class in the table above and click your stage's link.
  2. Read each question carefully and look closely at the picture. The picture often holds the clue.
  3. Choose one answer from A, B, C and D.

  5. Share the quiz with your friends and classmates!

For parents and teachers

These quizzes follow the NEP 2020 stages and focus on competencies rather than rote memory. Younger learners observe and count; older students apply formulas and interpret graphs and diagrams. Teachers can use them as a quick Engineers' Day classroom activity on 15 September, and parents can sit with younger children to explore the pictures together.
